Smart Yard Management System

Overview

Large automotive plants often manage thousands of vehicles across open storage yards before dispatch. Vehicles arriving from production must be parked, located, inspected, prepared for dispatch, and loaded onto transport vehicles.

Without a digital yard management system, the process becomes difficult to coordinate. Operators must manually search for vehicles, track storage locations, and confirm dispatch readiness.

Our team implemented a Smart Yard Management System that provides real-time visibility of vehicles stored in the yard and supports efficient dispatch operations.

Operational Problem

In a traditional yard environment, several operational challenges arise:

  • Difficulty locating vehicles across large storage areas
  • Manual tracking of vehicle storage locations
  • Delayed dispatch due to vehicle search time
  • Lack of real-time visibility for dispatch teams
  • Difficulty maintaining FIFO dispatch logic
  • Limited coordination between production, yard storage, and dispatch teams

The objective was to build a digital system capable of identifying vehicle locations in real time and coordinating yard operations efficiently.

System Architecture

The Smart Yard Management System was implemented using a layered architecture. Vehicle position tracking was enabled using a Real-Time Location System (RTLS).

Vehicles entering the yard are associated with tracking identifiers. Beacon devices installed across the yard detect signals from the tracked vehicles and determine approximate location within the yard area. These signals are transmitted to a central yard management platform.

The platform processes the location signals and determines the position of each vehicle within designated yard zones. The yard management platform runs on a centralised server environment and communicates with enterprise systems responsible for production and dispatch coordination.

Core System Components

RTLS Tracking Layer

Beacon devices positioned across the yard detect signals from tracked vehicles and determine their location within designated yard zones.

Mobile Clients

Handheld devices allow operators to scan vehicles, confirm storage actions, and record dispatch operations directly on the yard floor.

Yard Monitoring Dashboard

Large display screens in the dispatch office and loading areas show real-time yard status, vehicle positions, and dispatch readiness.

Administrative Clients

Operator workstations allow supervisors to manage yard configuration, vehicle allocation, and dispatch scheduling.

Yard Visibility Interface

The system provides a digital yard map that displays vehicle locations across designated storage areas. Supervisors can identify:

Vehicle storage locations across all yard zones

Available yard capacity per zone

Vehicles ready for dispatch

Vehicles awaiting inspection or preparation

This interface replaces manual yard tracking processes and allows operators to locate vehicles quickly without physical searches across the yard.

Integration with Enterprise Systems

The yard management system integrates with enterprise systems responsible for production planning and dispatch scheduling. Integration allows the system to retrieve information about vehicles arriving from production and vehicles scheduled for dispatch.

This ensures that yard operations remain synchronised with production output and logistics schedules.

Operational Benefits

The Smart Yard Management System improves yard operations by providing real-time operational visibility. Key improvements include:

  • Faster vehicle identification and location tracking
  • Improved dispatch coordination across yard and logistics teams
  • Reduced time spent searching for vehicles
  • Better utilisation of yard storage capacity
  • Digital support for FIFO dispatch logic
  • Improved coordination between yard operators and dispatch teams
